Bariatric Dietitian
New Zealand Registered Dietitian | Specialist in Metabolic Bariatric Surgery
Caryne McKeand is a highly experienced bariatric dietitian with a career spanning the UK’s National Health Service and more than a decade within Aotearoa New Zealand’s public health system. Originally from England, she graduated from Glasgow Caledonian University with a BSc (Hons) in Human Nutrition & Dietetics before beginning her career in Yorkshire, where she first specialised in metabolic bariatric surgery.
In 2012, Caryne relocated to New Zealand and joined Te Whatu Ora Waitematā. Over the next 11 years, she led the bariatric dietetic service, working closely with surgeons, clinical nurse specialists, and multidisciplinary teams to design and deliver patient‑centred pathways. Her leadership helped shape a service that integrated surgical expertise with comprehensive nutrition care, ensuring patients received the right support before and after surgery.
In 2023, Caryne moved into private practice and now provides dietetic support for patients of Auckland Weight Loss Surgery, where she is employed by Allevia Hospitals. She enjoys working directly with individuals, tailoring care to their unique needs and empowering them to succeed long‑term with their surgery goals.
Bariatric nutrition is a rapidly evolving field. Social media has changed how patients share their experiences, new obesity‑management medications are emerging, and we are learning more about how factors such as neurodiversity influence eating behaviours and weight.
